Army cots are comfortable when compared to the ground. If they are put together correctly, they provide a tight sleeping area and room to stash gear below. There are a few tricks to assembling one that come with experience. The main steps are easy, getting the last part together is tricky and requires strength or ingenuity.

  • 1

Unstrap the end sticks from the main body of the cot. The straps also keep the cot from unfolding. During this step make sure the cot has two end sticks and that the four ends of the side rails have dowel plugs. (romad.com)

  • 2

Unfold the cot until the side rails, the long parts to which the canvas is attached, are straight and the legs are all on one side of the bars. While unfolding, make sure the canvas does not get caught in any of the hinges. (romad.com)

Start to pull the side rails away from each other so the cot can stand on its own and the canvas is still a little bowed in the middle.

Stretch the Canvas

      .  4

The two end sticks have holes on each end and are made of the same material as the side rails.

  • 5

Take one of the end sticks and slide it through the tube in the canvas in one end of the cot. Slide it through until one end is sticking out of each side of the tube.

  • 6

Position the end stick so the holes with the plastic buffers are away from the cot and the holes on the opposite side of the bar from the plastic buffers are over the dowel plugs on each of the side rail ends.

  • 7

Take the second end stick and slide it through the tube in the other end of the canvas. Slide it through until one end is sticking out of each side of the tube.

  • 8

Position the second end stick so the holes with the round plastic buffers are away from the cot like the first bar and pull on it to stretch the canvas and get it on the dowel plugs on each end of the side rails. This is the hardest step of the cot setup, see the tips section below for ideas on accomplishing this step.

  • 9

If the end sticks are easy to put in place and the canvas is loose, rotate the end sticks to put the plastic buffers between the end stick and the side rails.
